According to an obituary in the Medford Mail Tribune on June 13, 1996, the pool was funded (in part at least) by an endowment from Albert and Margaret Meyer in 1983. The endowment was in memory of their son, Daniel, who died in 1982. He was a San Francisco stockbroker who died of a heart attack at the age of 42. Albert Meyer grew up in Ashland and become a wealthy banker and philanthropist. The couple retired to the Rogue Valley in 1970 and contributed to many causes in the area over the years. Albert died in 1996 at the age of 82, and Margaret died in 2011 at the age of 96.
