1863 Military Road 3: on 700 Road near Twin Ponds Road

Directions

From Medford take Highway 140 toward Klamath Falls. Drive just over 28 miles to the Butte Fall-Fish Lake Highway. Turn left onto the Butte Falls -Fish Lake Highway. Drive about 9 miles (between mile markers 25 and 26) and turn Right onto the Twin Ponds Road or Highway 37. Drive about 1.5 miles, at which point Highway 37 turns to the left. Stay straight on Twin Ponds Road, also labeled the road to the Twin Ponds Trail. Continue for about 2.6 miles. The road makes a right turn, and road 700 exits to the left. Watch for a small sign in the bushes on the right. Drive about 0.8 miles. The historical marker can be seen straight ahead near an old unused road, as road 700 veers slightly to the left. The plaque on the railroad marker has been removed by some enterprising citizen. The unused road going straight ahead is the old Jacksonville-to-Ft. Klamath Military Wagon Road built in 1863.

This marker on Road 700 is located on the path of the 1863 military road as it went from Four Bit Ford to Four Mile Lake. The National Register of Historic Places has documentation on this site under the National Register Information #79002068.
