Evans Ferry

Directions

From Medford, head north on I 5, and Take exit 48 for Rogue River. At the intersection, turn left, pass under the freeway and cross the river on the new bridge.  Turn right onto Highway 99. The marker is in the Fleming Memorial Park to the right.  It’s near the sidewalk at the parking lot, to the left of a picnic bench.  In the park there is also a large black marble memorial to John E. Fleming and other servicemen killed in the Vietnam War as well as several picture boards about the history of this spot.

The inscription on the marker reads

EVAN’S FERRY

“Davis Evans established the first ferry this site in 1851.  It was known as Jewett’s

Ferry, 1853-1861.  The 1862 flood destroyed the ferry, but it was replaced.

The Woodville (Rogue River) Bridge was built here in 1909.”
